Forum: opensource_audio Subject: Mp3.com discussion thread

Simon noted that a thread started in the LMA forum is actually a little more relevant to this section, perhaps. So, why not just move it over here for best discussion? Continue here based on OSA-relevant quotes from there:

akb wrote re mp3.com deleteing contributor content

It seems mp3.com is being acquired and will delete the contributor content. This could be an interesting opportunity for the IA audio holdings to increase substantially in scope and diversity.

simon c replied:

Here's the inevitable Slashdot thread on the matter:

http://slashdot.org/articles/03/11/14/1253257.shtml

Seems that CNET are buying them, and all artist content will be removed in December - not clear what will happen after that.

There are alternatives, such as:

http://www.besonic.com
http://www.iuma.com

..but perhaps Creative Commons and the Archive could do a little news release targeting people about to get their songs kicked off MP3.com mentioning the Open-Source Audio section in this neck of the woods :)

Just looking for something else, I stumbled across this:

Shoot, then the apparent followup

Hey Simon, I took the plunge and posted a pointer to IA to that \. thread. It'll probably be lost among all the other chaff as usual. ;)

...I just now tried to post a similar thing off the mp3.com msgboard announcement and got "rejected- account banned". Whoa! Oh well.

Does the Archive even have a press-release-writing arm? I don't know from my personal vantage in the trenches. :)

It'd be cool to have Creative Commons release some info about it, perhaps, maybe only on their weblog, maybe something larger - the Archive doesn't have a particular Open-Source Audio moderator besides Jon, who's far too busy to write press releases, heh.

Actually, if you go to:

http://creativecommons.org/learn/artistscorners/musicians

..you'll see:

'Need a home for your large music files?

Creative Commons has partnered with the Internet Archive's Open Source Audio Project to offer free hosting for Creative Commons licensed music. Share your music online without being burdened with high bandwidth costs!'

..and the front page of:

http://creativecommons.org/

..has an RSS feed of latest Creative Commons-licensed content from the Archive in the bottom left.

This is a reason for other open-source audio uploaders to take the time to add a Creative Commons license, btw - your release will get a link on the front page of the Creative Commons website, at least until it scrolls off :P
